The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international scientific, conservation and education charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. ZSL London Zoo, which opened in 1828, was the world’s first scientific zoo, and its existence forged the way for the modern understanding of animals. Zoo staff still observe animals in the collection to understand more about the ecology of different species, and this research is used to enhance the conservation work for wild animals. Much of the world’s wildlife is under threat or in decline due to loss of habitat and ZSL hopes that engaging visitors with the plight of these animals will inspire action in the next generation of conservationists.

The Zoological Society of London runs ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo; carries out research at the Institute of Zoology and is actively involved in field conservation around the globe.

With more than 650 species of animal, from giraffes to snakes to lions, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo offer amazing learning opportunities in both informal and formal settings.

Many of the animals living at the Zoos are under threat in the wild and by visiting us you make a direct contribution to field conservation and protecting these animals in their natural habitat.

Through your visits you also help ZSL to provide advice and technical assistance to other conservation groups and help communities around the world to protect their local wildlife.
