The Zoological Society of London (ZSL)
is an international scientific, conservation and education
charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and
their habitats. ZSL London Zoo, which opened in 1828, was the
world’s first scientific zoo, and its existence forged the way
for the modern understanding of animals. Zoo staff still observe
animals in the collection to understand more about the ecology
of different species, and this research is used to enhance the
conservation work for wild animals. Much of the world’s wildlife
is under threat or in decline due to loss of habitat and ZSL
hopes that engaging visitors with the plight of these animals
will inspire action in the next generation of conservationists.
