Eduplay UK Ltd launched
their highly acclaimed ‘Arithmasticks’ product at the Education Show
in March 2003. For those of you who are not familiar with
Arithmasticks, it was developed by Kim Ridgeway for her daughter who
at the time was struggling to get to grips with addition and
subtraction.
Like many children Kim’s daughter was a visual/kinaesthetic learner
who needed to be able to see how numbers worked in order to grasp the
concept. Arithmasticks, which was recommended as a ‘good educational
product’ in 2004 by the National Association of Toy and Leisure
Libraries, is a very tactile product that provides strong visual
images to support young learners with number discovery, learning to
count, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and missing
numbers. It can also be used with older children to introduce the
concepts of negative numbers, ratios and fractions. |

It is a simple but
clever resource that fills children with confidence and acts as a reliable
and striking visual facilitator for children with or without special
needs. It is a high quality product made of wood and consists of 1-20
number lines, blank number lines and a set of sticks that represent
numbers from 1-10. Instruction cards are supplied with the product which
is available either as a single user set (suitable for 1-2 users) or as a
class pack (suitable for 4-8 users). A Teachers’ Activity Guide is also
available and additional 1-20, 21-40 and -10 to +10 number lines can be
purchased separately.
A new colour coded set has been added to the range for 2006 and is
available in W H Smiths from March 2006.
In September 2004 Eduplay launched two more Arithmasticks products;
Arithmasticks Fractions and Arithmasticks Fractions, Decimals &
Percentages boards. The boards are available in natural varnish or colour
coded. The boards are frequently described by teachers “as the best
fractions products they had ever seen” and can be used to show equivalent
fractions, inequalities, addition and subtraction.
All Arithmasticks products are practical, multi-sensory learning resources
that give users the confidence to explore a whole range of mathematical
problems. They are easy to explain and children will want to use them over
and over again.
