Breast Cancer Campaign was established
in 1988 with the aim of
researching the cure
for breast cancer by funding research which looks at improving diagnosis
and treatment of breast cancer, better understanding how it develops and
ultimately either curing the disease or preventing it.
Breast Cancer Campaign is
the only charity that specialises in funding independent breast cancer
research throughout the United Kingdom.
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer
in the UK it affects one woman in nine during her lifetime, around 12,990
women and 310 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Britain
has one of the highest death rates in the world and we need to understand
why. Statistics cannot describe the impact of the disease on the lives of
those who are affected by it and on their families and friends.
Breast Cancer
Campaign ultimately wants to cure or prevent this disease and as a way of
reminding women to check their breasts regularly Breast Cancer Campaign
has employed the help of Guardian Angel. She is responsible for reminding
women to be breast aware and know what is normal for them.
Talking about breast cancer in schools can help by:
-Reducing the
fear that surrounds breast cancer
-Correcting
myths
-Providing
information and advice on how to deal with the emotion that cancer evokes
-Showing
students how they can help others that may be suffering
Learning
through fundraising
Teachers often
see fundraising as an administrative nightmare, but incorporated into
lessons through the new “Citizenship” module, it can be a great learning
tool, and can make students view their studies in a more positive light.
It can teach responsibility, organisation, marketing and motivation as
well as just how hard you have to work to raise money!
Citizenship
Being able to contribute to society as a whole is important for
young people, as they respond well to being taken seriously by both peers
and by those in authority. Organisation of a charity event, be it a cake
sale or fashion show, allows students to learn valuable skills. Doing
something for charity inspires an understanding of how to play an
effective role in society.

English lessons can be
used in the planning stages of the event, as well as for thanking people
afterwards.
