The Royal British
Legion is the UK’s leading charity providing financial, social and
emotional support to millions who have served and are currently
serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. 10.5 million
people in the UK (men, women and children of all ages) are
eligible for support from the Legion. Men and women who are serving or
who have served in the Army, Navy or RAF and their dependants benefit
both as Legion members and from Legion support. People as young as 17
can be sent on active service, so veterans are often much younger than
people realise. |
 |
The
Legion is not just about those who fought in the two World Wars of the
last century, but also about those involved in the many conflicts since
1945 and those still fighting for the freedom we enjoy today. This year,
as always, British troops have been posted to the forefront of some of the
world’s most dangerous trouble spots and they may need our help in the
future. As well as providing immediate welfare care, we are the Nation’s
custodian of Remembrance, ensuring their sacrifice is never
forgotten
 |
The Legion is a
nationwide charity with local branches and clubs. Anyone of any age
can become involved and support the Legion – you do not have to be
ex-Service.
We have special youth membership for kids from 14 – 18 years old.
Younger people can also become involved in our fundraising activities,
and obviously support our welfare work by buying a poppy during
Remembrance time in November. |
Every
year we produce a School’s Pack and DVD, aimed principally
at teachers of pupils in Key Stages 1-4 studying History,
English and Citizenship. They include specific lesson ideas linked to
National Curriculum units, as well as some original footage,
website references and additional sources of information for study. This
is available to teachers free of charge.
|
We also organise
Travel and Learn tours to a range of battlefields across Europe,
through our Remembrance Travel department. There are tours
encompassing locations specific to the First World War, the Holocaust
and the Cold War, and individual tours can be arranged to places
further afield, such as Israel and Italy.
The Legion’s website is
at
www.britishlegion.org.uk, and contains a special section with
information for schools. You can also download our School’s Pack from
here for free, or email for your copy of our School’s DVD. For further
information call the Legion’s helpline, Legionline, on 08457 725 725
(open 10 am – 4 pm Monday to Friday). |
