Company
Background
Budget was founded by Morris Mirkin in 1958 in Los Angeles, California,
USA as a rental car company for the “budget-minded” personal renter.

It broke into an already
crowded market, where three established on-airport competitors charged
$10 a day and 10 cents a mile, by operating off-airport and offering
more competitive rates than its on-airport competitors.
During that first year,
Morris and his wife single-handedly managed a fleet of 10 cars
available for $4 a day and 4 cents a mile.

Two years
later, Budget Rent a Car was established, and the foundation of a system
of corporate-owned and licensee-owned operations was laid. Since that
time, Budget Rent a Car has continued to stay true to its name, providing
renters with the same value for money, quality service.
Today, Budget Rent a Car has grown to become the world’s third largest car
and van rental system. Worldwide, Budget employs approximately 16,000
people and operates an average fleet of over 150,000 cars and vans from
more than 2700 locations, including more than 800 airport locations, in
over 115 countries and territories.
In November
2002, the Cendant Corporation acquired Budget’s operations and franchised
locations in the Americas, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand plus
the rights to franchise and operate in Asia. Cendant operates or
franchises Avis car rental locations in the same regions.
In March, 2003, Avis Europe completed the acquisition of certain assets of
Budget Rent a Car. These included the rights to use the trademark and
name, together with the existing Budget licensee agreements and royalty
streams, throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Under strong new ownerships, Budget continues to operate as a separate
brand worldwide. As a customer-driven company, Budget’s goal is to be the
undisputed leader in value for money car and van rental.

Today, Budget is one of only three truly global car rental companies, and
enjoys leadership in a number of markets throughout the world.

Rental's fleet ranges from small cars to luxury models, including
hatchbacks, saloons and estates, with all the latest models available.
Typically none of our cars is more than six months old. We also provide
commercial vehicles ranging from small vans through to 7.5t trucks.
Service
At Budget, quality service levels are essential for repeat business and we
are well positioned here having, in August 2004, been awarded the notable
ITM awards for both UK Car Rental Company of the Year, and Award of
Excellence in Customer Service.
Simplicity
Budget strives towards simplifying some

and was awarded first place by Travel Mole Travel and Tourism Web awards
2004 as the Best UK Car Rental Website for its 'ease and simplicity to
use'.
