CompuCover is suitable for educational establishments who wish to insure their ICT equipment against theft, accidental damage, fire and flood.

This wide-ranging insurance cover for notebooks and other ICT equipment in the education sector, ensures maximum protection against the risks arising from the use of mobile technology.

CompuCover is a specialist All-Risks insurance policy for ICT equipment that has been designed with the notebook user in mind. Notebooks as well as other ICT equipment are covered against theft, accidental damage, fire and flood and when being used at school, home, other buildings or when travelling - that includes outside of the UK!

CompuCover understands that education users take notebooks outside of protected environments - and therefore provides the range of cover required by teachers and pupils. It recognises insurance cover has to be appropriate for all types and sizes of school and further education establishments.

The success of CompuCover in meeting these challenges is illustrated by over 3500 schools and 70 universities that use this unique cover to protect their ICT equipment from theft and damage.

  • CompuCover covers laptops, desktops and peripherals for 'All Risks' insurance against theft and accidental damage including when stolen from a locked car boot.

  • The insured is covered anywhere in the world including whilst travelling.

  • In the case of an individual policy immediate family members are insured to use the equipment.

  • Pupils, students and staff are covered in schools/universities, when travelling and at home.

  • Educational establishments can be confident that all pupils, teachers and staff members are insured.

What is NOT covered?...

  • The policy does not cover thefts from unattended cars where the item is not concealed from view.

  • Where equipment has been left unattended in the open or mislaid the claim will not be covered.

  • Electrical and mechanical breakdown, maintenance, wear and tear and fraud and dishonesty are not covered.

  • Once you have made a claim there is no automatic reinstatement, a reinstatement fee will have to be paid.

Our extensive experience insuring computers within the education sector indicates that the incidence of theft from staff and pupils is increasing. Most theft occurs when the unit is unattended at school or home. The loss of a machine can impact dramatically on staff and pupils. Along with ensuring you have the appropriate insurance there are measures you can adopt to avoid damage to and theft of your computer equipment.

  1. Keep quiet about deliveries of equipment - theft is most likely in the first 72 hours.

  2. Notebooks and equipment replaced after a successful claim are likely targets (85% of computer thefts within the education sector were repeats. Lessons from Schools - Burquest and Pease 1992)

  3. The majority of these repeat thefts take place within 30 days of a previous incident. Implement measures to ensure a similar incident cannot take place!

  4. Note that a large proportion of computer theft takes place in the early evening, between 7pm and 9pm. (Pulling the plug on Theft - Police Research Series 101, Whitehead and Gray 1998)

DO...

  1. Consider a specialist policy such as CompuCover. Insurance excesses can be high and consequently there is a danger that equipment may have to be replaced out of already severely stretched funds.

  2. Treat the equipment as if it is your own property even when ownership is with the school.

  3. Visibly mark to indicate ownership or use security protection.

  4. Make sure you know where the unit is and never lend it to an uninsured party.

  5. Transport carefully - it is not a toy but an important aid to your work/education.

  6. Use an approved carry case but ideally not one that advertises its contents.

  7. Store computer equipment in a secure room.

DO NOT...

  1. Leave your notebook unattended in a public place or vehicle.

  2. Make it obvious it is a portable computer when transporting it.

  3. Use a notebook close to the edge of a desk or other surface.

  4. Leave pens or any other object on the keyboard when closing the lid.

  5. Slam the lid shut.

  6. Put drinks anywhere near the unit.
