Front-row sound quality for hearing impaired students
Hearing impaired students who wear a hearing aid or cochlear implants often find themselves in situations in which they require additional hearing assistance.

Since unwanted background sounds are amplified at the same level by the hearing aid, it is difficult and frustrating for the student to listen clearly to the instructor or to take part in conversations with classmates. Even with the best hearing aids, this ability to focus on particular sounds is lost.

Hearing aid wearers are also challenged by an effect known as head shadow. A hearing aid worn in the right ear, for example will naturally pick up sounds from that side at a higher level. Sounds coming from the left are less easy to listen to, being masked by the head. This effect is common during group discussions in the classroom.

Even listening to subtle sounds in quieter classroom environments is difficult for hearing impaired students. To prevent straining, it is often necessary to turn up the hearing aid, often resulting in an annoying feedback whistle as the hearing aid begins to re-amplify its own output. The result is often that the student switches off his or her hearing aid, and this greatly impairs their learning experience.

An affordable alternative
Some, but not all, classrooms are equipped with induction loop systems to provide listening enhancements for hearing aid wearers. There are, of course, equally effective and more affordable alternatives. For example, The Conversor, a wireless FM assistive listening device from UK-based Conversor Products Ltd, offers students a versatile and easy-to-use solution for front-row sound quality in classrooms and lecture settings up to 25 metres from the instructor. This is enabled by a unique patented technology, which enhances the available sound level and filters out surrounding noise up to 30 db.

By filtering out background and peripheral noise, the desired sound is much clearer and more intelligible. And by increasing the available sound level, The Conversor puts less strain on the hearing aid amplifier, eliminating distortion and feedback at higher sound levels.

Easy to use by students
Designed for comfortable and discreet use, The Conversor consists of two components - a compact and wireless FM microphone and a lightweight pendant receiver. The student can either hold the microphone and point it at the desired sound source, or place it conveniently on a nearby surface, for example in the middle of a table for group interaction. The microphone can also be worn by the instructor for enhanced intelligibility as he or she moves about the classroom. The pendant receiver is worn around the student’s neck, above or discretely beneath clothing. It picks up the sound transmitted by the microphone and sends it to the hearing aid with enhanced clarity and at a comfortable sound level. Even students who do not wear a hearing aid, but are challenged by a hearing impairment, can use The Conversor with headphones, which plug easily into the receiver. Students can easily focus on the sounds they want to hear by using one of two settings on the microphone - either the Zoom setting to focus on one-to-one conversations and listening to a distant speaker, or the Omni-Directional setting for unhindered access to group discussions.

The Conversor is a versatile assistive listening device that students can use even outside the classroom for greatly improved hearing at home as well as at social events and family gatherings.

The new Conversor® MultiPack, a convenient assistive listening device kit, also from UK-based Conversor Products Ltd., addresses the needs of multiple hearing aid wearers in classroom, lecture and meeting room settings, providing them front-row sound level and clarity up to 25 metres away from the speaker. Contained within a sturdy portable carrying case, the Conversor® MultiPack consists of two Conversor wireless FM microphone/transmitters and eight lightweight Conversor pendant receivers. Each transmitter can be used with multiple receivers, which are set to the same frequency. All 10 units can be charged easily within the rugged carrying case, eliminating the need for additional charger units.
