If you are
interested in geography, then the Geographical Association is for you!
The Association is dedicated to promoting
the development of geography as a subject. It believes that geography
makes both a distinctive and a wide contribution to education and that it
is an essential component in preparing young people for life in the
twenty-first century. The GA is also committed to providing support to all
those who are engaged with it - whether out of personal or professional
interest.
The GA is . . .
. . the
professional association for geographers
The GA has over 9500 members, many of whom are from the teaching
profession, whether teachers in schools, higher education, advisers or
inspectors. The GA is a major contributor to securing the place of
geography in the curriculum and provides access to specialist assistance
on aspects of geography and geography teaching. It is highly respected as
one of the leading subject teaching associations and regularly consulted
on a wide range of issues concerning geography in education.

. . a major provider of quality resources
to the profession
The GA is a major educational publisher of books, teaching packs, posters
and other resources written and compiled by subject experts for geography
teaching at every phase. Members receive phase specific catalogues twice
each year and a 35% discount on all resources. The three journals that the
Association produces are Primary Geographer, for teachers at key
stages 1 and 2, Teaching Geography for secondary teachers, and
Geography, an international journal of geography. The GA also provides
curriculum advice, professional development, conferences and other
networking opportunities.
. . a voluntary organisation
Run by its members and open to all, its work is determined and monitored
by a structure of committees which focus on and develop many aspects of
the subject and which are supported by a Headquarters staff based in
Sheffield. Whilst it is a national association, its regional and local
structures provide a significant opportunity for the views of the
geographical community to be heard and represented.

. . locally active
The GA maintains over 40 Branches which stimulate local activity
throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Through its committees and
project based activities, the GA offers numerous opportunities for
individuals to make a positive contribution to the strengthening and
extension of geography's input to education. Project based activities
include the Worldwise Quiz and Geography Action Week both of which enjoy
high reputations for quality and school involvement.

Status of the GA
The Geographical Association is an independent registered charity
(Registered Charity No. 313129) and its work is governed by formal
Statutes and Standing Orders approved by the Charity Commission. The
governing body of the GA is the elected Council of members which
determines the policies of the Association and regulates its finances. The
GA receives no direct external funding and is financed primarily through
membership subscriptions together with income derived from the sale of
other resources.
