Greenpeace Environmental Trust (the
Trust), a registered charity (Registration Number 284934) educates the
public about the current world ecology and the effects of human activity
on our environment.
The Trust promotes responsible concern for
the natural environment, and helps the general public to be better
informed on environmental issues that affect us all. We do this by funding
scientific research, education and investigations in key areas of
environmental concern, such as:
The
tracking of illegal logging operations in the Amazon region, where we have
also supported work in partnership with the Deni Indians to map out and
preserve their traditional homelands.
The
promotion of renewable energy sources to harness the clean renewable
technologies of wind, solar and wave power to generate electricity without
burning fossil fuels.
The
provision of information about genetically modified ("GM") crops
in the UK, studying the problems associated with GM ingredients in animal
feed and the growing of GM crops as 'scientific field trials'.
As part of our educational work we have
produced cross-curricular resource material for key stages 2 and 3,
developed in consultation with members of the teaching profession and
designed to meet the needs of the National Curriculum.
The material includes:
·
Clearly written
and accessible information
·
A multi-media
experience examining the issues
·
Downloadable task
sheets which provide thought-provoking questions and activities at varying
levels of difficulty, each of which requires students to study the
information provided on the web pages and to develop their own opinions on
the issues raised. They are, for instance, encouraged to engage with the
advantages and disadvantages of renewable and non-renewable energy by
participating in role-plays and debates.
