Health Scotland (previously known as the
Health Education Board of Scotland) is the health improvement agency for
Scotland. This website provides information and resources to support
organisations and health practitioners, who are working to improve the
health of the Scottish nation and reduce inequalities.
The work of Health Scotland spans every aspect of improvement including
planning, evaluating and delivery across the range of health topics and
stages of life.
Key aims
Our overall aim is to provide leadership and to work with partners to
improve health and reduce health inequalities in Scotland.
We commission and carry out a wide range of research activities
investigating the underlying causes of poor health and health issues in
Scotland.
In this respect we study and advise on problems such as excessive
alcohol usage, such as from the perspective of what more liberal
licensing laws would have, and issues such as underage drinking linked
to peer pressure. Poor diet is another problem that is being studied
together with all the resulting health problems that ensue, including
obesity.
We look to encompass health issues such as heart disease and what
factors contribute to make the Scottish data worse than England and
Wales.
Drugs
Parents can be given guidance for discusion about drugs with teenage
children. You are given the facts about drugs and how they are used as
well tips on how you can talk issues through with your children.
First Aid
Essential first aid advice is given.
Healthy Living
As part of the Scottish Executive healthyliving campaign, you can obtain
resources, tips and advice on healthy eating and physical activity.
Small changes can lead to big benefits.
Looking outward on a global perspective Health Scotland contribute and
accept data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) so enabling them to
measure the health of Scots against a broader world picture.
