
Lakeside YMCA
Lakeside YMCA is the YMCA National Centre for Outdoor Activities in
England and Wales and is one of the largest outdoor education centres in
mainland Europe. Situated on the South-West shores of Lake Windermere in
the Lake District National Park, Lakeside is nestled within a stunning 400
acre woodland estate, offering a safe and secure location within superb
surroundings, with access to an unparalleled wealth of land and water
based outdoor activities.
Lakeside's Educational Philosophy.
Lakeside has a strong history of being at the fore-front of pioneering
work within the outdoor community. Lakeside staff being also able to draw
upon a wealth of personal experience that, as a whole, contributes to
Lakeside's ability to tailor courses to meet each groups specific
objectives and requirements. This flexible approach to course structure
allows Lakeside to embrace many aspects into a school or group's
programme.
Specialist Courses.
Lakeside is also proud of it's heritage in having pioneered many fresh
approaches to outdoor education. These successes include the design and
implementation of it's Specialist Courses.
Special Needs
We have a wealth of experience in developing courses for groups who have
specific disabilities and needs.
Activities.
Lakeside is able to offer an impressive range of challenging land and
water based activities. Each one establishing and developing a mixture of
different qualities and skills within the group and individual, providing
a sense of both personal and corporate achievement through the challenges
set. Course activities also expose students to some of the greater
environmental issues impacting the world around us.
Accomodation
(Sommervell House).
Accomodation at Lakeside is split between two sites North Centre and South
Camp. North Centre provides year round accomodation comprising of
Sommervell House and our new woodland lodges. The Somervell House building
offers two residential wings containing rooms with bunk beds sleeping four
people per room. The toilet/shower/drying facilities are within the block,
as are two bedded bunk rooms for visiting staff with ensuite shower
facilities.
Woodland Lodges (North Centre).
Peacefully nestled in the woods around North Centre, these wooden lodges
each sleep 8 people (bunk beds). A modern toilet/shower block and drying
room are nearby. At North Centre, a relaxing and comfortable lounge, with
it's own fridge and unlimited supply of tea and coffee, provides space for
peaceful reflection for visiting leaders.
South Camp
South Camp is open between April and September. Situated on the shore of
the lake, these secluded tents provide camping in comfort for 8 people,
with a raised floor, fly sheet and mattress.
Prices
Our courses are designed to offer groups value for money. All courses
include food, accomodation and a structured programme of activities with
qualified instruction. We are also able to offer one free Leader's place
and a second Leader at half price for every 12 participants booked.
