Situated in the heart of Covent Garden, and housed in the atmospheric former Victorian flower market, London's Transport Museum offers a unique perspective of two hundred years of London's public transport, its impact on the growth of the capital and the lives of Londoners.

Explore fascinating displays of trams, buses, trolleybuses and Tube trains and meet characters from the past. Clear and innovative interpretation, together with friendly and enthusiastic staff ensures a memorable experience for everybody.

Designed to appeal to Londoners and tourists alike, the Museum invites visitors to take a journey through time, telling the story of interaction between transport, the capital, and its people, form 1800 to the present day. "Hands-on" exhibits, special Kidzones, working models and the latest technology, including videos and touch-screen displays in several languages, contribute to the story. Visitors can even put themselves in the driving seat of bus or Tube train simulators, or hear the hiss and thump of points changing and horses clattering through cobbled streets.

The displays are further enlivened by actors who help explain the effect public transport has had on London and the lives of Londoners. With the actors, visitors travel back in time to meet characters who have kept London moving for the last 200 years, working on the buses, digging tube tunnels beneath the City and even sweeping up horse dung from the streets.

Displaying maps and archive material, the air-conditioned Beck Gallery tells the story of the world-famous London Underground map, designed in 1931 by draughtsman Harry Beck and now recognised as an icon of London itself. The original watercolour presentation drawing of the Tube map was donated to the Museum in 1993. The Frank Pick and Ashfield Galleries are used to stage special temporary exhibitions.

For visitors wanting to delve further into transport history, one innovative feature of the Museum is its Resource Centre where, with help from a member of staff, reference books, videos and a London Transport poster database can be seen without prior appointment

The Museum has been designed to attract visitors of all ages and interests and offers a full programme of activities and events from poetry readings and lectures to story telling and children's workshops.

Our Education Service arranges school group visits and provides materials to match the requirements of the national curriculum. We also run a School Liaison programme looking at safety and citizenship on the Underground and on the buses. Educational visits to the Museum are free for children under 16 if pre-booked. The Museum also offers interpreted access tours for those with visual or hearing impairments.

A lift and ramps provide wheelchair and pushchair access throughout the Museum and we have toilet facilities for the disabled.

The Museum's comprehensive website www.ltmuseum.co.uk is regularly updated and as well as comprehensive information on the Museum, our collections and activities, you will also find online exhibitions and learning resources.
