HAVE FUN IN THE SUN WITH SUN PROTECTION YOU CAN TRUST

Malibu Suncare makes sun protection products you can trust, at prices you can afford. Malibu’s range covers different formats of sun protection to safeguard the skin against the sun’s harmful rays, including Lotion, Lotion Spray, Dry Oil and Mousse and, after exposure to the sun, we’ve a choice of After Suns to moisturise the skin.

We at Malibu know that for most of us a sun tan makes us feel and look glowing and healthy. But remember, such a feel good factor comes with a price if you don’t protect your skin properly from the harmful rays from the sun. Memories of red, blistered skin? Well, getting sun burned also prematurely ages the skin and that means guaranteed wrinkles!

If you want that tanned look without any of the risks, try faking it! No need to fear that “tangoed” look if you do the right preparation. Exfoliation (scrubbing away the dead surface skin) in the bath or shower with a skin brush or exfoliating product, followed by moisturisation using a body lotion (or an After Sun lotion which will add lots of moisture to the skin) will leave the skin ready to take your self-tan product. Make sure your moisturised skin is thoroughly dry, then apply your chosen self-tan in a thin layer, taking particular care around your eyebrows and hairline. Apply only an extra-thin layer over the driest areas – knees, heels, elbows. Malibu’s Self-Tans come in Lotion, Gel or Mousse.

USE THE RIGHT AMOUNT

With Malibu’s consumer friendly prices starting as low as £2.99, there’s absolutely no reason to skimp when applying sun lotion. The basic rules are – apply plenty before you go into the sun and re-apply it frequently, especially after swimming or strenuous exercise. And don’t forget those overlooked spots, such as tops of ears and feet. Malibu’s Dry Oil can even be sprayed through the hair to protect the scalp, without making it greasy.

TRUE OR FALSE?

Let’s dispel a few myths.

  • If you’re olive or dark skinned, you don’t need sun protection – FALSE

  • You only need to use sun protection when abroad – FALSE

  • You don’t need to use sun protection if it’s cloudy – FALSE

  • One good application will last the day – FALSE

  • You won’t get a tan if you use SPF 15 or over – FALSE

ALL SKIN TYPES NEED PROTECTION

Whether you’re a child or you’re fair skinned or dark skinned, there is a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to suit your particular skin type - the SPF is shown on the front of a pack, usually with the description – Low, Medium or High Protection. Skin cancer cases are on the rise in the UK and, according to dermatologists, this statistic includes all skin types. When Afro-Caribbeans and Asians develop melanoma, the prognosis is often worse because detection is usually very late. Some believe their skin can withstand the sun's damaging rays better than it can and tell-tale redness, visible in over-exposed white skin, does not show up on darker skins.

40% of young adult Afro-Caribbeans, surveyed recently in the UK by Malibu Suncare, have experienced sunburn (with possible long term scarring damage), yet 42% have never worn or purchased sun protection. Malibu’s clear Dry Oils are great for black skins as they leave no unsightly white film on the surface.

For typical, British, white skintypes, dermatologists recommend using at least an SPF15. This won’t stop you tanning but will protect you and, without the burn, you’ll tan more slowly; but your skin won’t peel so your tan will last longer.

GOLDEN RULES FOR EVERYONE

  • Children’s skin must be protected from sun damage whenever they play outside – use Malibu’s SPF 30 specially formulated for young skin. A hat and tee shirt will give added protection, particularly when playing by water

  • It’s best to avoid the strong mid-day sun, but if this is not possible, make sure you use a High Protection sunscreen – SPF 15 and up – cover up and wear a hat

  • Apply sun lotion thickly and evenly and re apply frequently

  • And remember, sitting in the garden or park in the summer sun without sun protection can be just as dangerous to the skin as lying on a Mediterranean beach

Enjoy the sun, but enjoy it safely
