Mill on the Brue Outdoor
Activity Centre, in Bruton, Somerset, has been operating since 1982 and is
a family run, not for profit educational organisation, open all year.
Based on a Victorian farmhouse and converted Barns in 20 acres of
beautiful Somerset countryside with the River Brue running through, most
of the activities are on site so there is no bussing to different areas.
We have deliberately kept the numbers down and take a maximum of 50
residential plus visiting staff, though we do have day visitors as well.
Very often the school will have the Centre completely to themselves which
we know is a great attraction. The programme is
individually written for each school with an average of six different
activities per day.

Since the early years we have
kept the aim of self development of all firmly in our sights. As the first
Company in Somerset to gain the Investors in People and the only one to
gain a National Training Award we are firmly committed to the development
of the individual.
Confidence and achievement are very much the cornerstones of any school
visit.
We provide conventional activities such as canoeing, climbing, zip wire,
high ropes etc but because of our background in management training and
counselling, have thought constantly outside ‘the box’ and devised many
tasks and problem solving initiatives for children and adults alike to
tackle. Experiential learning at its most effective.
We also have a strong environmental and sustainable ethos– recycling and
reusing comes naturally, we also grow our own organic vegetables and fruit
which are served to the customers at meal times; delicious homemade,
wholesome meals which are an education to many children!
We are not standing still –included in the plans for 2005 is a brand new
dining room and kitchen built as an environmental showcase with recycled
rubber tire slates, sheep's wool insulation, rainwater harvesting and
geothermic under floor heating.

We are also building an
environmental classroom to bring together all the strands of our policy
and hopefully by the start of the academic year, an artist in residence! A
tunnelling system will also be built towards the end of the year, again a
marvellous tool for leadership, problem solving, support, trust etc.
So whether you are planning a residential or day trip, for a conventional
outdoor pursuits course on or off site, or a course with a different
angle, Mill on the Brue can confidently meet or exceed your expectations.
A quote from our evaluation form: - 'All agreed Mill on the Brue offers a
first rate experience for pupils and staff, all undertaken in beautiful
surroundings. Excellent cuisine, superb staff, we shall return!' (West
Wittering Parochial School)
During the summer holidays Mill on the Brue runs multi activity courses
for unaccompanied children from 8-14 years both residential or daily. We
also have courses for teenagers from15-17 years on the Isle of Raasay in
Scotland. We arrange all the travel, flights, coaches, etc. Just see our
web site for details
