Museum of London is one of the largest urban history museums in the world, representing a quarter of a million years of history and telling the story of one of the world’s most diverse and fascinating capital cities. The Museum is very popular for school visits, which can support and enrich learning across the curriculum.

At present the Museum is undergoing a major redevelopment to create inspiring new galleries and a state of the art learning centre.

During this time we continue to offer a full programme of Museum based sessions, as well as self-directed visits to galleries covering prehistoric times to the Great Fire of London in 1666. The available galleries are:

  • London before London
  • Roman London
  • Medieval London
  • London 1558-1666
  • London’s Burning: The Great Fire of London 1666

The Clore Learning Centre will open in September 2009 and the new galleries will open in early 2010. These galleries will retell the story of London and Londoners from 1666 to the present day, dramatically transforming the Museum with more space, new objects on display and online access to our fascinating collections. The new galleries will be interactive and child-friendly, and will tell the story of London’s diversity through the voices of Londoners themselves, from 18th century builders to 21st century Olympic hopefuls.

Museum of London has a unique collection of artefacts displayed in inspiring galleries. We also have an impressive handling collection of original objects and replica costumes, which are used in our programme of school sessions and study days. We offer a varied programme of sessions taught by experienced staff and catering for different learning styles.

Our expert staff are specialists in the varied needs of:

  • Early Years
  • Primary
  • Secondary
  • Special Needs

Schools can plan FREE self-directed gallery visits or book sessions and study days including gallery visits (charges are variable). Some sessions are free. Prices are kept as low as possible and are set on a session-by-session basis to meet our costs.

Descriptions of sessions, which provide an interactive focus for your visit, are listed separately in the Primary, Secondary or SEN brochures.

Sessions include:

  • object-handling and replica costume
  • gallery drama and theatre performances
  • storytelling and puppet shows
  • creative literacy, including structured role-play
  • outreach
  • video-conferencing

The Museum can cater for large numbers of school visits each day. Most sessions are designed for an average class size to ensure the quality of the learning experience.

We also advise on a reasonable adult to child ratio for support in sessions and galleries. To ensure an effective learning experience, we allocate gallery slots and limit the number of pupils allowed in each gallery at any given time.

All booked sessions are supported by resource packs, which are sent in advance of your visit. We offer suggestions for pre-visit and post-visit activities to help teachers and pupils get the most from the visit.

The website is continually being improved with high quality classroom resources to support visits to the Museum. These include:

  • gallery activities
  • activities for use with your class before and after your visit
  • a picture bank to use in class
  • a number of curriculum-related and general interactive games to be played as a class or individually

Also coming soon are presentations and quizzes for use on interactive whiteboards and more downloadable activity sheets for use in our galleries.

All resources are developed by expert staff and trialled with schools.

Photography is encouraged but use is restricted to educational purposes.

We are currently developing e-learning sessions which include use of computers, digital cameras, PSPs and audio recording. Please contact us if you are interested in sessions involving digital technologies.

Teachers are responsible for their own risk assessments. We can provide copies of our own risk assessments to support teachers and this advice will be uploaded to our website soon.
