THE NATIONAL FILM AND TELEVISION SCHOOL
The National Film and Television School educates new talent to the highest professional standard for tomorrow's screen industries. Our predominantly practical courses offer leading edge professional training for film and television, replicating industry working practices as closely as possible.
At the NFTS we value vision, independence and a collaborative approach. We aim to identify talent and aptitude and, in a learning environment that encourages diversity, creativity and independent study, to hone both to work effectively. Specialist and collaborative skills are developed through practical workshops and productions, complemented by seminars and master classes that analyse working methods in the light of relevant theory. Students also follow a comprehensive Screen Arts programme that expands their knowledge of screen history and culture.
We are unusual among film schools in being able to offer the experience of training in professional standard film and television studios and post-production facilities, allowing students to acquire a full understanding of the working methods and creative potential of the industry in which they'll make their careers.
Consultation with the many film and TV professionals who advise and teach on our courses ensures that they are relevant to the industry's present and future needs. This puts our graduates in a strong position to seize the exciting opportunities continually opened up by fast-developing audience demands and new production and delivery technologies.
Our courses
The MA Course, validated by the Royal College of Art, is a two-year, full-time course for people who have some experience of the field they want to specialise in. MAs are offered in directing (animation, documentary or fiction), producing, screenwriting, cinematography, design, editing, sound or music. We also run a one-year course in screenwriting and short modular courses in television producing/directing, though these do not lead to the award of an MA. The one-year Advanced Programme is for people whose experience makes them able to focus on a single project at a level beyond that expected of a student on the MA Course.
We train around 150 students at any one time. While many applicants have a first degree, relevant knowledge and practical experience are of primary importance and are treated as equivalent to academic study. NFTS courses are not for complete beginners and most students are in their mid-twenties when they enrol.
Our record
Since we were established in 1971, our 1000+ students and graduates have won some 800 awards, including Oscars and BAFTAs, an exceptional achievement. Our graduates are involved creatively with over 80% of all UK film production and, in 2000, NFTS graduates worked on all of the ten most popular original television dramas.
Graduates include Nick Park, creator of Wallace and Gromit, Lynne Ramsay, director of
Ratcatcher, documentarist Molly Dineen and cinematographer Roger Deakins. Recent films on which NFTS graduates have worked include Captain
Corelli's Mandolin, Gladiator and Bridget Jones's Diary while recent NFTS graduate credits on TV include
In a Land of Plenty, Perfect Strangers, The Cops, Clocking
Off, Inspector Morse and EastEnders.
