Ordnance Survey came about after a historical decision made in 1971 which required the mapping in detail of the whole country, the organisation eventually expanded to become one the country’s leading map maker and a major provider in digital geographical information.

Today it is a £100 million-a-year civilisation organisation, altough the company is still part of the UK Government, operational costs are covered by selling its products amd services or licensing others to use its copyright material. Ordnance Survey has moer responsibility for its own finances and planning allowing more freedom to develop new initiatives resulting from a government ‘Trading Fund Status’ given in 1999.
