Plescon Security Products

Plescon Security Products was first established in 1978. From our offices in Ipswich we supply innovative security solutions for public, academic and business libraries throughout the UK and abroad. Throughout those 25 years the library market has changed quite considerably - likewise we have gone from strength to strength to become one of the most reputable and reliable library security specialists in the country.

An established range of products includes: book detection systems offering both electromagnetic and radio-frequency technologies, a host of accessories including security triggers, deactivation/reactivation units, entry and exit gates, electronic people counters and state of the art self-service systems that allow users to issue and return their own items

In education, every penny counts. Expenditure needs to be justified and budgets spent wisely. In a library, the stock is the main asset - but it needs to be protected against loss from 'permanent borrowing' - either mistakenly or intentionally. The cost of installing appropriate security measures will quickly show results preventing the expense and frustration of lost stock.

Our reputation has been built over the past 25 years on the ability to listen and interpret the librarian's security requirements. Acknowledged for our specialist expertise in securing educational libraries we have a system or product to suit every situation.

The Electromagnetic system is the most popular system for academic libraries. Neat and simple to use, material is protected with a security strip - usually incorporated into a barcode, which is compatible with all known library management systems. To issue an item the librarian needs only to pass a hand held scanner over the barcode, this simultaneously issues and adjusts the stock control system. Once deactivated the material can be taken in and out of the library repeatedly without activating the alarm.

Many colleges and universities have extended their library opening hours to facilitate the ever-increasing demand from students to gain access to what is an essential aid to their studies. Any increase in students will inevitably mean an increase in the amount of books being issued and at busy times of the day such as lunchtimes large queues may form.

Described as a "Queuebuster", our self-issue machine Kwik-Issue is a simple to use system that allows borrowers to issue their own items without having to go to the issue desk. Ongoing development of this unit over the past year with Optical Solutions has resulted in the ultimate self-service machine. Our dual-purpose unit allows users to not only issue their own items but return them as well. Additional optional facilities include renewals, renew all items a payment facility and borrower information - a screen that details current loans, outstanding fees resulting from overdue items and a list of books that may have been reserved.

Operating the dual purpose unit couldn't be easier. Users insert their borrower card and simply follow the on-screen instructions which can be in the form of text, image, sound, video or a combination of all four. A touch screen enables users to toggle between the different modes of issue and return by selecting finish at the bottom of the screen without having to first remove their borrower card thus allowing users to issue and return a number of items in one simple transaction. Once all transactions have been completed the borrower simply removes their card and waits for the printed receipt.

All of the products that we supply have been developed with the librarian in mind. They are extremely easy to use and allow items to be issued quickly and efficiently - two very important factors in a busy library environment.
