Artists and architects
use visual languages that the viewer responds to emotionally and
intuitively. Equipping the visitor with greater insight into how these
languages work is the principal aim of
RA Education. The
visitor is also an artist in this learning process.
The Royal Academy offers a varied education programme of gallery
talks, workshops, lectures and resources to interest all age groups.
These are based around our ever-changing
loan exhibition programme.
School Visits
School groups can book in for a gallery visit, gallery talk or
workshop. All school visits must be booked in advance.
Group visits
Group visits for 10 or more students can be
arranged for any exhibition. Education resources in support of the
exhibition are available to all students when they arrive. There is no
time limit on visits and we encourage students to sketch in the
galleries.
Gallery Talks
With the support of gallery
educators, visitors to the exhibition are informed about and ‘read’
works of art. They explore the context in which the works were made
and also their own intuitive and emotional responses, looking at
composition, form, colour, shape, space and texture to gain knowledge
of the artist’s visual language.

Early Morning Visits
A special 9-10am slot for
gallery teaching is available on Mondays and Fridays for full time
students. This is before the galleries are open to the public and
allows for an exclusive view.
Workshops
RA Education offers an extensive
programme of practical hands-on workshops for both primary and
secondary schools throughout the school year. Primary workshops
consist of an introductory interactive slide discussion on the
exhibition, followed by a visit to the galleries in small groups of 3
or 4, each led by a trained education mediator. This unique small
leader to student ratio allows every pupil to experience a highly
personalised visit.
The students then take
part in a practical hands-on session specifically tailored to suit the
exhibition. All primary workshops are scheduled for 10.15am-1pm.
Secondary workshops consist of an introductory slide lecture,
exploring key themes of the exhibition, followed by a visit to the
galleries and a lunch break. The students then return for a practical
hands-on session specifically tailored to suit the exhibition. All
secondary workshops are scheduled for 10.15am-2.30pm.

‘Thanks again for yet another fantastic workshop. The Children
returned to school totally inspired.’
Teacher, Primary School
Teacher Private Views
These are held on the
Friday evening, before exhibitions open to the general public.
Admission is free, but places must be pre booked. They provide
teachers with an opportunity to view the exhibition, attend a lecture
by the curator exploring key themes and approaches, meet with
Education staff and collect resources.
Teacher and Student Resource
We produce Teacher
and Student Guides for all our exhibitions. These can be collected at
the RA at the time of your visit or are available online.

Music Workshops
In collaboration with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the RA
offers this unique event. In front of chosen works in the Summer
Exhibition, visitors are encouraged to use their intuition to
suggest and compose appropriate music for the artworks with the
help of an artist and professional musicians.
