What is the RYA?
The Royal Yachting Association is the National User Group for all forms of Boating under Sail and Power. It represents all forms of sailing, windsurfing, motor cruising, personal watercraft and powerboat racing, and at all levels from beginner right up to the Olympics.

How can I get involved?
There are many ways to get involved in boating. Find a friend who is already into boating and have a go with them, or join a local club whose interests match your own. Or there are a large number of commercial boating centres and schools around the country where you can pay for your boating and receive tuition. Our website contains listings of clubs and schools in your area - www.rya.org.uk

How do I know where to go to learn?

Recognised Teaching Establishments range in size and price to match every pocket. Depending on how much you pay, you will get a greater quality of hosting, such as your accomodation and even meals in with the price. What is common is that all RTE’s run RYA courses and are inspected by the RYA to ensure that quality of teaching is maintained. Look for the RTE Logo (above) as your assurance of quality training.

Is the RYA just for Beginners?
No - The RYA runs training right up to Yachtmaster Ocean, for those who want to rule the waves, and issues commercial certificates for those who want to make boating part of their job. And that’s just the Training side, we also run development schemes for Youth Sailing and Motor Boat Handling, plus we  run the High Performance Squad for our Olympic hopefuls. In Sydney 2000 the sailing team was the most successful nation in Sailing, and Sailing was the most successful UK sport in terms of medals with 3 Golds and 2 Silvers from 11 Disciplines.

Why should I join the RYA?
As the national governing body of boating, everybody who goes afloat benefits from the work that the RYA does. There is no compulsory levy on behalf of the RYA for recreational boaters, and we rely on the people who understand that supporting the sport as a whole is a good thing. In return there is a comprehensive package of benefits and offers that we make available to our members. In many cases the amount that you can save, far exceeds the small cost of membership - £28 Personal, £43 Family and £11 junior.
