Working to create a better world for children

www.savethechildren.org.uk/education

Who we are?
Save the Children fights for children in the UK and around the world who suffer from poverty, disease, injustice and violence. We work with them to find lifelong answers to the problems they face. Save the Children works in the UK, South East Europe, The Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

How did we start?

Save the Children was formed in 1919 to help children who had been affected by the First World War and to change the world for the better. Our founder, Eglantyne Jebb worked to place the rights of children at the heart of international thinking. And we fight just as hard for children today.

Young children take part in activities at the early years activity centre, Kilinjalmedu village. Kilinjalmedu village, on the coast of south India, was badly hit by the tsunami. Save the Children has built and equipped a temporary activity centre here for children aged 0-6.

What do we do?

Save the Children fights for children’s rights in the UK and across the world. Our emergency relief work runs alongside long-term development and prevention work to help children, their families and communities to be self-sufficient. We learn from the reality of children's lives and campaign for solutions to the problems they face. We gain expertise through our projects around the world and use that knowledge to educate and advise others.

Why do children matter?
All our work is underpinned by our commitment to making a reality of the rights of children, which was first introduced by Eglantyne Jebb in 1923 and later became the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The UNCRC has now been agreed and signed by almost every country in the world. All children deserve the best start in life – they have the right to live in a world which respects and values each child, which listens to children and learns and where all children have hope and opportunity.
