ScootElectric: Commuting that doesn't cost the earth

Congestion, pollution, noise, the rising cost of fuel...it's not exactly a barrel of laughs getting around town these days, not if you travel by car or public transport. Thankfully, there is another way.

ScootElectric is a pioneering UK company that sells a range of clean and quiet zero-emission electric scooters. Our efforts to improve air quality are recognised by the UK Government, sustainability groups and carbon reduction/climate change programmes.

Electric scooters are the antidote to the stresses of urban commuting and will help you rediscover the joy of just getting from A to B.

They are perfect for college and university campuses, and ScootElectric is pleased to offer discounted rates for teachers, students or anyone who works in the education sector. Call 01206 233180, quoting Educational Infomat, for more details.

Nearly all ScootElectric's scooters are full-size moped-style machines, like a Vespa only with a plug instead of a petrol tank. None of the noise or smell but all of the practicality and convenience and certainly no lack of style.

Top speed on an electric scooter is up to 35mph - fast enough to keep pace with the flow of city traffic - and because of their low centre of gravity, they're a dream to ride. For insurance, they are classified as sub-50cc mopeds, and you'll need to wear a helmet.

Power comes from whisper-quiet electric motors and rechargeable batteries that are sealed and completely maintenance-free. To 'refuel', you simply pull the plug from under the seat and connect it to a normal 13-amp socket.

The cost works out at less than 10p from empty to full, and that's enough juice to last anything up to 50 miles, depending on the model. Imagine that: scooters that can achieve the equivalent of more than 1,500 miles to the gallon!

If you want to be truly 'green' about it, you can always source your electricity from a ‘renewables’ specialist such as Good Energy, whose power comes principally from wind farms around the UK.

Just think of the tonnes of carbon you could be saving over a year by switching out of your car for selected journeys, not to mention the other pollutants that are contributing to the alarming rise in breathing-related illnesses in the UK.

Electric scooters have major advantages over their petrol-powered counterparts: There are no gears (just a throttle that you twist and off you go); no transmission; no fuel pump; no carburettor; no spark plugs; no pistons; no radiator and no combustion.

They are amazingly cheap to run, saving you money on petrol, parts, maintenance, road tax (e-scooters are zero-rated) and in London the dreaded congestion charge.

In many places, including railway stations, you can park them for free and often right next to the ticket office, saving even more time.

As an added bonus, some ScootElectric models, including the three-wheel SWAP Trike, already qualify for a £200 grant from the Government's Energy Saving Trust.

ScootElectric's machines range from the aluminium-bodied Helio, which has the looks of a futuristic bicycle, to the Domino's Pizza-approved Cargo Scooter, which can carry a 75kg payload for up to 50 miles and more.

ScootElectric also sells retro models, like the elegant Magic and the chrome-rich EVT168, which evoke the glorious Mod era.

BENEFITS OF E-RIDING

  • No petrol, no exhaust fumes, no smell

  • Extremely quiet

  • Relaxing to ride

  • Virtually maintenance-free

  • Exempt from road tax

  • Exempt from congestion charge

  • Equivalent of 1,000+ mpg

  • £200 Government grant on some models

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Journey times can be cut by 40-60% travelling by scooter.

  • Five scooters can be parked in the same space one car would occupy.

  • Road transport contributes 22% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. In London, it is estimated to account for around 80% of air pollution.

  • The typical car emits one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile travelled. So a standard vehicle will produce roughly its own weight in CO2 in just 6,000 miles.

  • Three in five car trips are less than five miles; one in four are less than two miles.

  • The average distance travelled to work by UK commuters is 8.5 miles - well within the range of an electric scooter.

  • Two-stroke internal combustion engines emit about eight times more pollution than cars.

  • Between 12,000 and 24,000 premature deaths occur annually in the UK due to air pollution. This compares to around 3,500 road accident deaths each year.
