The Wigmore Hall, located
north of Oxford Street at 36 Wigmore Street, London, W1, is a leading
international concert venue that specialises in hosting performances of
chamber music and is best known for classical recitals of piano, song
and instrumental music.
It was built at the beginning of the 20th Century to provide London with
a concert hall that was both grandly impressive yet intimate enough for
recitals of chamber music. With near perfect acoustics, the Hall became
quickly celebrated across Europe, acquiring almost legendary attraction
for the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Wigmore Hall promotes several hundred concerts a year and The Hall also
promotes an extensive education programme throughout London and beyond.
Thomas Edward Collcutt, was the designer of the Hall who also
responsible for the design of the Savoy Hotel on The Strand in London. .
Built in the Renaissance style, using alabaster and marble walls to
furnish a flat, rectangular hall with a small raised stage area complete
with a cupola above. The hall is considered to have one of the best
acoustics for classical music in Europe.
Wigmore Hall Community and Education runs events and projects for people
of all ages, enabling them to join in with chamber music and song as
performers, listeners, composers and music makers.
