Our vision is ‘a just world free from poverty’

Our mission is to drive positive change through the power of entertainment.

We do this by:

  • Raising money from the general public by actively involving them in events and projects that are innovative and fun.

  • Informing, educating, raising awareness and promoting social change.

  • Allocating the funds we raise in a responsible and effective way to a wide range of charities which we select after careful research.

Our biggest tool, in trying to achieve our vision, is the ability to inspire people across the whole country especially those who don’t normally do charity - to do charity. To find out more about us visit www.comicrelief.com

Comic Relief was set up in 1985 by comedians who wanted to do something to help others. The idea was simple - use comedy and laughter to raise money and change lives - while making sure that everyone had great fun at the same time. This idea is still integral to what we do but we've come a long way since those early days.

Over the years, more than two thousand celebrities have given their time and talent to Comic Relief - from Ali G, Billy Connolly, Catherine Tate, Davina McCall, Jerry Springer and John Cleese to Jonny Depp, Lenny Henry, Peter Kay, Ricky Gervais, Robbie Williams and Woody Allen.

Comic Relief now has two major fundraising campaigns: Red Nose Day and Sport Relief.

In the beginning...

Launched live on BBC ONE on Christmas Day 1985 from a refugee camp in Sudan, Comic Relief began with a few live events, drawing support from across the comedy community.

The first Red Nose Day hit our screens three years later in 1988 with Lenny Henry, Griff Rhys Jones and Jonathan Ross presenting the show and raising an amazing £15 million!

On Red Nose Day everyone in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is encouraged to cast inhibitions aside, put on a Red Nose, and do something a bit silly to raise money - celebrities included. It is an event that unites the entire nation in trying to make a difference to the lives of thousands of individuals facing terrible injustice or living in abject poverty.

Sport Relief harnesses the power of sport to change lives for the better.

At its very heart is the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile where hundreds of thousands of people across the country take to the streets to raise cash. The money raised is spent by Comic Relief to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world's poorest countries.

When you rise to the challenge for Sport Relief – either by doing something sporty to raise cash or getting sponsored to enter the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile – you are helping to change lives. By getting involved and raising money, you can feel good and do good too! To find out more about Sport Relief visit www.sportrelief.com

              Teach & Learn

Educating and informing is key to achieving Comic Relief’s vision and what better place to start than in schools?

Our Schools Team appreciates the needs of the classroom. We provide engaging, curriculum linked resources for Red Nose Day and Sport Relief. Our resources focus on real life experiences of young people who once faced discrimination, injustice or grinding poverty, but were given the chance to transform their lives through Comic Relief support. Together with our educational resources we also supply inspirational fundraising ideas, and lots of other fun stuff, to help schools raise stacks of cash for our Comic Relief projects.

We hope to help build a generation of global citizens who will actively tackle poverty and injustice.

Resources:

Check out our websites for great teaching and learning resources for ages 3-14. At their heart are the stories of real children from Comic Relief projects, with lots of ways for students to meet them and find out about their lives. Use our interactive learning ideas so children can find out about the serious challenges young people face around the world and in the UK. All learning ideas are great for Citizenship and PSHE/PSE National Curriculum areas, as well as English, Geography and P.E.

Our learning ideas do not stop at KS3. Our Enterprise resources enable older students to develop the skills, attitudes and qualities needed to become enterprising citizens. They encourage decision-making, creative thinking and initiative alongside a commitment to making a difference.

'The (Comic Relief) Schools Pack just gets better and better. We always have such a great day and a great experience along the way, learning so much about other children and planning our fundraising activities. Thanks so much to everyone on the Education Team, you do a great job.'
