Overview
The Scottish Road Safety Campaign began back in 1985.
It is now funded by the Scottish Executive and its
responsibility is to develop and co-ordinate road safety
initiatives and campaigns in Scotland. The Scottish Road Safety
Campaign (SRSC in short) co-ordinates with all local authority
and police Road Safety Units in an attempt to ensure an in step
approach to road safety in Scotland.
The SRSC takes an overall view on road safety, especially in
regard to schoolchildren, especially on their way to and from
school.
Target Campaigns
Like all road safety campaigners some problems are common
worldwide. With regard to drivers, the SRSC has active campaigns
against drivers intoxicated by drink or drugs, driving at
excessive speed or not taking into account road conditions in
bad weather. In Scotland rural roads may not be full of traffic
but they may not be as safe as the driver believes. They also,
in conjunction with other organisations such as the police, warn
and try to educate drivers regarding the road worthiness of
their vehicle.
Highlighted is the unacceptable number of road accidents to
young children, many caused by not wearing illuminated clothing
at night
In Car Safety
The SRSC have a rolling programme of road safety education,
including advising parents regarding the suitability in child
seats and the correct installation and fitting of these child
safety seats.
Cycling
The SRSC encourages the promotion of cycling proficiency schemes
in conjunction with other organisations beginning with proper
cycle training off road for the young.
The SRSC’s objective is the create greater awareness from all
road users, whether they be pedestrians, cyclists, motor
cyclists or car drivers.
