The Amateur Martial Association

The amateur martial arts association (AMA) is the largest organisation in the UK. AMA is very active on the international scene with members and associated members from many foreign countries.

Going from strength to strength since it’s founding in 1972. The following styles are currently associated with the Amateur Martial Association: Ju Jitsu, Karate, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Judo, Freestyle, Escrima, Silat, Krav Maga, Self Defence, Tai Chi, Kempo, Aikido, Hapkido, Sedate, Mau Thai, Capoeira, Jeet Kune Do.

So what makes it Amateur? You see an amateur executive committee controls the AMA with a general secretary, a president, a vice president and technical committees. As well as the amateur executive, the amateur rule for contests is that no prize money or financial inducement may be awarded. Professional instructors and proprietors are welcome in the AMA, but may not vote on the executive committee.

The main purpose of AMA is to, promote the sport & practice of martial arts and it’s recognised coaching. Promoting the codes of safety in sport and practice, the moral, mental, physical, and social well being of members, and obtain, collect, receive, and administer money and funds for these purposes. To cooperate with other bodies having similar aims for purposes recognised by law as charitable. So you see the association shall be amateur i.e. be controlled by a committee with no controlling interest. The associations competitions shall be amateur i.e. no prize money awarded and members shall be amateur i.e. shall not receive prize money from the association

AMA works closely with the world association of kickboxing organisation (WAKO), who are the largest unified kickboxing organisation in the world since there founding in 1970.
