Arcadia is the UK’s largest
clothing retailer, with eight brands in the UK Topshop, Topman, Dorothy
Perkins, Evans, Burtons, Miss Selfridge, Outfit and Wallis and an
increasing number of international stores. There are over 2000 outlets in
high streets and in shopping centres throughout the country.
The Arcadia brand began back in the 1900’s with Montague Burton borrowing
£100 to set up his own menswear shop, within 10 years the business had
expanded into a chain of 14 shops. The First World War gave Burton the
opportunity to supply uniform clothing for the armed forces. By the mid
1940’s Burton was estimated to be clothing about one fifth of the British
male population.
Burton expanded into womenswear in the 1946,after expansion in this market
Topshop was launched by the mid 1960’s. By 1952 when Sir Montague Burton
died, Burtons was one of the largest tailors in the world. In the 1970’s
and 80’s the group developed acquiring Evans and Dorothy Perkins.
Debenhams were also acquired but later emerged from in the late 90’s.
During the 90’s further brands including Wallis, Miss Selfridges and
Outfit were also acquired. Each brand aim to target a different market and
many of the Arcadia Brands has leading positions in their market.
