Computer
and laptop theft remain serious issues for schools
Stolen
IT equipment still represents a major challenge for schools. Insurance
premiums are at an all time high and the roll out of additional, smaller and
more portable IT solutions into the classroom presents a massive concern. Insurance companies
react with increased premiums and higher excess charges. This means that for
the loss of 1 or 2 computers schools often have to find funding for
replacement models out of an already tight budgets. Even if a schools
insurance excess is relatively low insurance companies will not insure for
such hidden costs as replacement software, re-installation of software, loss
of information etc...
Schools
should carefully consider where IT suites are situated and how access will
be restricted. Laptops should be stored off site. Any items left on site
should be secured with suitable solutions such as LPCB approved security
enclosures.
In
addition it is advisable to follow the following guidelines:
 |
Promote new
equipment as little as possible |
 |
Boxes of new
equipment should not be stored outside the school |
 |
If possible
move IT suites to the 1st floor |
 |
Check your
alarm response time |
 |
Consider a neighbourhood
watch scheme |
