Members of the British Flute Society enjoy the benefits of Europe's oldest and most exciting flute organisation. Pan magazine is recognised worldwide as being a highly informative and entertaining flute journal. Every quarter, Pan brings members articles on all aspects of the flute and flute playing. It is the authoritative guide to the latest flute news, concert listings, courses and reviews of new music, books and recordings.
The BFS is committed to bringing internationally acclaimed soloists to its events. Events in the past have included those with Marco Granados and the Scottish Flute Trio at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow and a convention in 1999 featuring over 30 acclaimed international stars, including Larry Krantz, William Bennett, and Atarah Ben-Tovim, at the Royal Northern College of Music, in Manchester. An exciting Celebration of the last Century of Music was performed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London in April 2001. This attracted stars such as Dave Heath, Philippa Davies, Ian Clarke, David Nicholson and Kate Lukas. A highly successful composition competition attracted over 40 entries, and a special commission by the Society, by composer Errollyn Wallen, was performed at the Gala Recital by Philippa Davies.
Future Events in 2002 include a Teachers Day with Kate Hill and Dr Diane Boyd Schultz. The 6th Performance Plus Competition, sponsored by Bill Lewington, will also take place.
