Job Title: Apprentice

Job Type: Modern Apprenticeship

Company: BT

Sector: Telecommunications

Aren’t apprenticeships just for plumbers and builders and things?
“Being an apprentice is about learning and earning at the same time, so it’s not just about those old trades. I mean, BT is about as hi-tech as you get. And it does mean you get a chance to put all the stuff you learn into practice straight away, which is how I pick things up best. You get your foot in the door at a seriously big company, and you can work towards practical qualifications as well.”

What you could do…
Apprentices at BT can go into four big areas. There’s information technology, looking after the service customers get from our cutting-edge stuff. There’s business management, keeping our finances on track. Then there’s technical, building and maintaining our digital network, and  fleet service, taking care of one of the UK’s biggest fleets of vehicles.

Wouldn’t I be better off going to university?
“I could’ve gone to university, I just didn’t fancy it. I’d been at school for years and wanted to get on with actually doing something. I’m still learning lots, just on the job, not in a classroom. And then there’s the money. University was going to cost me a packet, whereas here I’ve already got a job, I’ll get qualifications, and there’s loads of opportunities to progress. And there’s ten grand in my pocket straight away. I’m independent. I’m sorted.”

What you will get….
Our apprentices work towards different qualifications depending on the job’s they’re doing. It could be NVQs, BTECs, HNCs, even a degree. Their salary starts at a cool £10,499. On top of that, there’s 25 days' holiday a year, the chance to buy BT shares, a pension and discounts on BT products.
