“…The entire course so far has been a joy and a delightful breath of fresh air. It has reminded me of why I came into teaching, has re-stimulated my own pleasure in literature and language and in exciting and inspiring children to love books and language. I have gone home each course day feeling inspired and I am starting to have real opinions about what is effective language teaching.... …”

Publications and research
CLPE is renowned for the quality of its publications, based on research in real classrooms.

The Reader in the Writer, Myra Barrs and Val Cork
“…This is a book which teachers of literacy should know. It is wise and thoughtful, inspiring and committed and rooted in life and literature and learning…”
Books for Keeps, January 2002
The Reader in the Writer reports on a study of the influence of good quality texts on children’s writing in Key Stage2.

Book-based Reading Games, Helen Bromley
“CLPE has produced a great deal of excellent material over the years (their ability to balance research and erudition with practical advice and support for children and teachers is nothing short of miraculous) …This book is an absolute godsend to teachers, parents and school librarians…”
School Librarian, 2001
The culmination of fourteen years' work in classrooms, Book-based Reading Games demonstrates how to make games from high quality, familiar texts and how to use them with groups of children from the nursery class to older inexperienced readers at Key Stage 2.

Understanding Spelling, Olivia O’Sullivan and Anne Thomas
“…This book should be essential reading for all NQTs, literacy co-ordinators and teachers who are concerned about the spelling attainment of children in their classrooms.”
Charles Cripps, Times Educational Supplement, 2000
Understanding Spelling is based on a three-year study of children’s spelling in different primary classrooms. The book examines the different kinds of knowledge involved in spelling and looks at the kinds of teaching and interventions which make a difference to children’s progress.

Recent publications include Book-based Reading Games, Whole-to-Part Phonics, Understanding Spelling, Choosing Texts for the National Literacy Strategy, The Core Book List, and Boys and Reading.
