One-stop shop for cyclists

CTC is the UK's national cyclists' organisation with almost 70,000 members. CTC represents all cyclists, campaigning for better provision on road and improved offroad access, facilities for cyclists in towns and cities and on public transport and improvements in road safety so that more people take up cycling.

CTC is also one of the best sources of travel information and cycle routes both in the UK and abroad. Membership entitles cyclists to affiliation to their local group, free liability insurance and legal aid, a bi-monthly magazine and the yearly Cyclists' Welcome, a directory of services for cyclists on holiday.

One of the major concerns of cyclists and potential cyclists is road safety. CTC believes that cycles belong on the highway not on shared use paths or cycle routes that disappear when they reach the most hazardous sections of roads such as traffic lights and roundabouts.

But to be confident on the road, cyclists must ride competently and responsibly. That means using lights when it is dark, reflective clothing, and abiding by the same highway rules we expect other road users to stick to. If you feel happier with a helmet you should wear one but be aware that helmets are only designed to provide protection in low speed falls, not in crashes with larger vehicles moving more quickly.

Many people give up cycling, and other activities, when they leave school. Others may never have had the chance to enjoy the UK's unique network of lanes and our stunning areas of countryside by bike.

For those, who would like to return to cycling or ride for the first time but without the confidence to do so, CTC and Bristol-based Cycle West are developing a cycle training scheme on behalf of the government. Once complete, CTC will publish and promote the scheme which will be available to local authorities, employers and others keen to train cyclists in their area.

Amongst CTC's other services are cycle specific insurance policies. The CycleCover insurance schemes provide cover designed by cyclists for cyclists and include cycle insurance, travel insurance and cycle rescue - similar to the service provided by the AA for car drivers. Unlike other insurers, CTC policies do not exclude students or offroad riders.

Membership for those under 26 has just been reduced to £10. For this, young people receive all the benefits listed above - plus access to technical information and a mail order shop, details of cycle hire outlets and offroad centres and, if you wish, the chance to get involved in campaign work as part of our Right to Ride Network.

For membership details call 0870 873 0600, email cycling@ctc.org.uk or visit www.ctc.org.uk
