DOGS TRUST YOUTH
EDUCATION PROGRAMME
ABOUT DOGS TRUST
Dogs Trust is working towards the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy
life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction.
Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, seeks to achieve this
aim through the work of its nationwide network of Rehoming Centres,
education programme and campaigns. Through these activities we aim to
end cycles of negative attitudes and behaviour towards dogs, and to
reduce the number of abandoned and unwanted dogs in the UK.
DOGS TRUST AND EDUCATION
Education plays an important role for us in promoting key messages about
responsible dog ownership, as well as aiming to make children think
about the commitment involved in owning a dog before asking for puppies
as presents.
Dogs Trust has developed a comprehensive Education Programme that offers
FREE resource packs for teachers, from Foundation stage to Key Stage 4,
covering a wide range of subjects. These resources have been designed to
give teachers interesting new lesson ideas, and are fully linked to the
Curriculum for ease of use.
OUR FREE RESOURCES
The packs outlined below have all been developed in conjunction with
practising teachers, include complete teachers’ notes to help plan
lessons that are fun and fully relevant to the curriculum, and are FREE
to all UK schools!
OUR WEBSITE
www.learnwithdogs.co.uk provides both teachers and pupils with a
wealth of resources all aimed at encouraging responsible dog ownership
and safety through the National Curriculum. You will find all our
resource packs, movies and more, available for free download in the
Teachers section of the website.
The Fun pages, are jam-packed full of fun online activities that come
complete with teachers’ notes for use in the classroom. The Canine Gang;
Rosie, Rex, Flick, Zippy and Muffin will guide you through their
favourite activities – but which one will you like best? You can look up
all sorts of dogs on Rosie’s Doggy Database, help Flick Fetch, or take
Zippy’s Robot dog for a virtual walk! And, you can meet our newest
addition to the gang – Digger – as she guides you through all the things
you need to know about organising your very own FUNdraising event!
Schools can now also order a box of Canine Gang cuddly toys, to sell.
They are perfect for school fetes, birthdays and Christmas. All proceeds
from sales of the toys go to Dogs Trust.
Visitors to these pages can also now download our popular Owning a Dog
and Stay Safe around Dogs leaflets; these fun leaflets help you to learn
all you need to know about dog safety and how to be a responsible dog
owner, with handy do’s and don’ts that are easy to read and remember.
DOGS TRUST EDUCATION OFFICERS
Our Education Officers offer free workshop sessions to schools and youth
groups in our campaign regions – Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic
of Ireland, the North East and North West of England. The workshops are
designed to stimulate discussion about issues of dog ownership and safe
behaviour around dogs and to encourage responsibility in the next
generation of dog owners and citizens. More information about the
Education Officers can be found on the website.
