FEDERATION
of IN-LINE SPEED SKATING (FISS)
The
Federation of In-Line Speed Skating or FISS (most commonly known as) is
the national governing body for the sport of in-line speed skating within
the UK. As a governing body,
we sanction domestic and international race events that are held within
the UK by the various registered in-line speed clubs.
At these events, races are also held for non-registered skaters
(general public) who may wish to try out the sport before making a
commitment to join a speed club or the Federation.
These
are known as RAT Races.
To
become a member of FISS you must apply to Head Office, details of which
can be found on the FISS Website. Each
new member receives an information pack, which includes a calendar of
events for the forthcoming year along with details on how to enter.
Annual membership fees are £17.50 for under 18’s and £25 for
18’s and over. The fees are
due in January but payment is on a pro-rata basis for new members only
depending upon the time of year you decide to join.
If
you would like to come and have a look at what it is all about just look
on the website for an event near you and come along.
You might even want to bring your skates and have a go in a RAT
Race where everybody who takes part gets a
medal. The only thing that
FISS insist upon is that whenever you race or skate on the race track you must
wear a crash helmet.
Although
it is known as in-line speed skating, there is nothing stopping you using
traditional rollers skates if you wish.
The general high street skate shops and sports shops usually stock
all of the well-known brands of skate, for both recreational and fitness
skating. However, the more
serious speed skater relies upon specialist equipment, which can be
purchased through distributors listed on the FISS Website.
A complete basic set up will cost you around £150.
So
come along and try your hand at what we are sure you will find as both a
fast and exciting sport. Get rolling…!!
