The Golden Hinde
Educational Trust has recently been established to preserve Golden Hinde
ship for the nation. The Golden Hinde is an accurate reconstruction of Sir
Francis Drake’s Tudor Galleon berthed on the Thames in Bankside. The ship
operates as living history museum, running a fulltime schedule of
educational programmes suited to schools and families. These include
guided tours, workshops and the opportunity for both schools and family
groups to spend a night on board the ship on an imaginary voyage. Dressed
in period clothes, Drake’s new recruits learn 16th Century skills, eat
Tudor food and experience life 400 years ago. The ship is also open to the
public for self-guided tours, private hire, Wedding ceremonies and
children’s Pirate birthday parties.

EDUCATIONAL VALUE |
|
Nothing brings learning alive quite like the inspiration of a new
environment. Our unique, lively and interactive educational program is
linked to the national curriculum, suitable for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3.
All activities are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences,
which will stimulate and enhance the understanding of what is taught
in the classroom.

GUIDED TOURS
Led by costumed guides, the tour takes one and a half-hours. Pupils are
taught about life aboard a Tudor warship and Drake’s voyages. Your group
will visit the armoury to turn the capstan and raise the anchor and then
onto the hold where provisions and captured treasure were stored. Your
group will be shown how to load and fire the cannons on the gun deck,
learn the gory details of the barber surgeon’s trade and the punishments
awarded for bad behaviour at sea. Tours are tailored to the children’s age
and topic studied. A teacher’s pack is supplied with a confirmed booking.
LIVING HISTORY EXPERIENCE
Now your students can experience living history aboard the Golden Hinde.
Dressed in period clothes, children and accompanying adults will be taken
back in time by professional character actors playing the roles of
colourful crewmembers. Groups will participate in many shipboard tasks,
learn skills and experience the daily problems of 16th century seafaring
life whilst discovering the attitudes and beliefs of the crew. The
characters represent the differing levels in society of Drake’s crew. The
children will become involved in the drama and excitement as the voyage
preparations develop. The Living History Experience can be booked as an
overnight stay or as a day event. Basic bedding and all meals are
provided. A teacher’s pack with a schedule of events is supplied with a
confirmed booking.
WORKSHOPS
We offer 2 and 3 hour Tudor Workshops for classes that might not be able
to stay overnight or for a whole day. In these ‘mini’ Living History
Experiences students learn about life aboard a Tudor warship and are
introduced to all the skills needed for a voyage with Sir Francis Drake.
Students will be introduced to early navigational skills; they will be
taught how to load and fire a cannon and introduced to the gory secrets of
the barber surgeon’s trade. During the 3 hour workshop students will have
a short break with a light sailor’s snack, to regain their strengths after
raising the anchor. A teacher’s pack is supplied with a confirmed booking.
MARITIME DAY OUT
The group will start the day at 10am at the National Maritime Museum
Greenwich with a Tudor Explorer session covering early exploration, an
examination of the reasons for, and impacts of, early exploration. The
group will leave the National Maritime Museum at 12.45 for the 13.15 ferry
towards Bankside pier. The journey takes about 45 min, during which time
children are advised to have their lunch. The ferry will pass a number of
important London sites and sometimes the captain will give a commentary.
The afternoon will be spent at the Golden Hinde, putting into practice the
nautical skills learnt earlier in the day. The groups will arrive at the
Golden Hinde at 14.15 to start the afternoon workshop, which will finish
at 16.15 in the afternoon.
