Remember to see all the important information at the bottom of the page.

BACKGROUND

Area Profile
Oxford lies in the heart of England, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Cotswolds and Chiltern Hills, the Berkshire Downs and Thames Valley.  With London less than 50 miles away and easy access by car, train and coach, Oxford is a very desirable place to live.

Renowned for its famous universities but also the many beautiful and historic buildings, parks, gardens and meadows that run into the heart of the city.  The old city is loosely divided between Town and ‘Gown’.  In the town area, department stores, bookshops, small speciality shops as well as cafes, coffee houses and ancient pubs stand alongside university buildings.

With two rivers on each side of the town, Oxford offers plenty of opportunities for making use of the waterways.  Well known is the Boat Race with ‘rival’ Cambridge who issued a challenge in 1829.  The two university towns still complete every year in March.  The race keeps more or less 400 million people around the world holding their breath as they watch the event held on the River Thames.
