The Helicopter Museum

The Helicopter Museum,
Weston-super-Mare, Junction 21 of M5, over 70 helicopters undercover,
dating from 1931 to present day in Britains only and the Worlds largest
Helicopter Museum, is Internationally renowned. Officially opened in 1989.
Collection consists of small
private helicopters, two of The Queen's Flight, large passenger carriers,
world speed record holder and several that have been in combat.

Adopt-a-Copter
Scheme whereby you, or your group, look after a helicopter by keeping it
clean.
Airfield
Museum is situated on part of the old Weston-super-Mare Airport and has
ties with AgustaWestland (previously Westlands) Web site
www.whl.co.uk who,
until 2002, had a factory on the other end of the airstrip.
Today helicopters can land and take off from the museums' heliport.
Archives
Extensive helicopter archives that can be viewed by appointment.
Birds
Many kinds of birds have been spotted within the grounds of the museum
including, buzzard, cormorant, goldfinch, grey wagtail and skylark.

Books
Museum shop stocks many aviation books.

Lectures etc.
Educational Sector
In contact with LEA and have visits from cubs, scouts, school parties and
University aeronautical engineering students.

James Bond movies - helicopter sequences are spectacular - we have several
types that have featured in different films e.g. Brantly, JetRanger,
UH-12,
OH-6, Huey.

Friends of The Helicopter
Museum
Anyone can become a member of The Friends of The Helicopter Museum for an
annual fee. You will receive quarterly newsletters and gain free entry to
the museum during the year. The group holds various fund raising events

Helicopter Experience Flights
All-inclusive tickets for entry to museum and Helicopter Experience
Flights can be purchased. You will learn how a helicopter works from the
pilot, and see the surrounding land from a different perspective.

Record Holders
Lynx helicopter is the current World record holder.
Restoration Hangar
Volunteers carry out restoration projects such as the Kamov K26, rolled
out on 18 December 2002 after work lasting over three years.

Royalty
Two of the Queens Flight are in the collection.
His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew The Duke of York opened the museum in
1989 and opened the second hangar in June 2002.
Technical
The design and use of helicopters cover both engineering and mathematics.

Volunteers
The Helicopter museum has a thriving volunteer section (nearly 50 -
including many youths). Volunteers help run the shop, and many work in
teams on the restoration of helicopters in the Restoration hangar.
Volunteers have social events e.g. barbeques.
