The Truth Behind Used Cars
For over 65 years, HPI has provided the most
comprehensive and reliable vehicle information in the motor industry. Each
year we help millions of vehicles to change hands safely by delivering
accurate, instant data on their description, condition and status. That's
why, when deciding whether to purchase a car, more people turn to HPI than
any other information source.
1 in 3 vehicles checked with HPI turns out to have something to hide. It
could be something apparently innocent, like a cherished plate transfer.
Or it could be something much more sinister, like a police or insurance
theft record. Either way, for less than the cost of a tank of petrol,
we'll give you the facts - immediately - so that you can make the
right decision. And isn't it always better to be safe than sorry? So
before deciding on one of the biggest purchases you'll make, it pays to
conduct an HPI check with a mileage check,V5 document check, stolen MOT
check and valuation (where available) now included, you'll get more
comprehensive information as standard than with any other vehicle check.
Better still, HPI Checks are backed by the HPI Guarantee, protecting you
with up to £10,000 cover* against losses arising from incomplete or
inaccurate information.
What's in an HPI
Check?
Every HPI Check includes a Certificate and
Guidance Pack, as well as immediate on-line or telephone confirmation of a
vehicle's status under all these headings:
Vehicle Description
Confirms the vehicle's details as first recorded by the manufacturer -
colour, make, model, door plan, fuel, engine size/number and transmission
type.
First Registration
Gives the date the vehicle was first licensed at the DVLA. Also indicates
the year in which the vehicle was manufactured, the number of previous
keepers registered and the date of the last recorded change.
VIN Match
The unique Vehicle Identification Number is normally stamped on a plate
under the bonnet or in the door frame. The HPI Check uses DVLA-supplied
data to confirm if the VIN you supply corresponds with the current
registration number.
Plate Transfer
Indicates whether a vehicle has had a registration plate change since
April 1990. People change their plates to personalise their vehicles, but
they can also alter them to obscure a vehicle's history.
Security Watch
Highlights vehicles which may be at risk from fraud or theft and are not
legally for sale, such as hire cars, demonstration cars and garage
forecourt models.
Stolen Vehicles
Provides information from the Police National Computer on vehicles that
are confirmed as currently stolen. Never buy a vehicle on this register,
because you stand to lose it and the money you paid for it.
Outstanding Finance
Nearly two-thirds of new vehicles sold every year are purchased using some
form of finance agreement. The finance company may have the right to
repossess the vehicle, however innocently it was purchased.
Condition Alert / Condition Theft
Warns if a vehicle has been subject to an insurance total loss claim, or
'written-off' due to damage or because it has been stolen and not
recovered. For vehicles recorded post-January 1997 you'll be advised of
the category of damage registered.
Condition Inspected
Details 'written-off' vehicles which have passed an independent Thatcham
approved structural examination since January 1990.
Document Check
Provide your V5/logbook serial number and issue date and the HPI Check can
confirm whether it has been recorded as stolen. And HPI can do the same
for MOT certificates.
Vehicle Valuation
Helps you determine the market value of the vehicle you want to buy. The
valuation, where available, is based on the information you supply with
respect to the vehicle's condition, mileage and source.
Mileage Check
HPI cross references the mileage you provide against any readings
previously recorded on the vehicle and advises you whether any
discrepancies have been identified. In these cases, you will be provided
with a printed report of previous recorded mileages.
HPI also runs the insurance industry's database
of total loss vehicles and has more condition data on more cars than
anybody else. 500,000 cars are 'written off' by insurers annually
because of accident damage. Many are so seriously mangled that they are
deemed incapable of safe repair.
Your Best Defence
Against Clocking
The National Mileage Register is the UK's largest
and fastest growing database of mileages, providing the best intelligence
available to protect you against clocking.
Clocking is estimated to cost the motorist and the motor industry over
£100 million a year. Ex-company vehicles are a favourite target, but any
vehicle with above average mileage can be affected. Today's cars can hide
mechanical wear and tear better than ever, and their digital odometers
make clocking even easier to commit - and more difficult to detect. That's
why, when buying a used vehicle, you need to give yourself a head start on
the clockers by insisting on an NMR Check. Many reputable dealers already
provide the reassurance of NMR, and every HPI Check you buy now includes
an enquiry with the industry's leading database. Provide HPI with a
mileage and we can compare it with nearly 80 million others already on
file, to alert you to any apparent discrepancies. If previous readings
indicate the odometer may have been tampered with, we will disclose them
on our HPI Confirmation Certificate. We'll also tell you if we have a
record of an odometer change, warning you that the mileage displayed won't
reflect the true distance covered.
1 in 11 cars checked by consumers shows a mileage
discrepancy. Buy a clocked car and you could pay thousands of pounds over
the odds and never know what maintenance it really needs, or when. HPI's
National Mileage Register holds almost 80 million reading - more than
anybody else.
