Wellbeing at Home and in the Classroom

Bullying

'All my life I have been bullied. Well at least I mean periodically and not at home - not literally every minute of my life. That really would be a sad existence! I have found this a very upsetting chapter to write so I hope it helps some of you. I know writing it has made me resolve never to let them get away with it again. If you are being bullied, then you do the same'
Luke Jackson, Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome

Bullying at some level, or in some form takes place in every classroom. Our books offer guidance on detecting and understanding bullying as well as practical advice on developing anti-bullying policy. We publish books for teachers, but also books for children that can be used as a classroom resource to help teacher and pupil explore reactions and solutions to bullying.

Drugs
As policy and approaches to drug taking are questioned and changed, our books and workbooks are designed to offer teachers, parents and youth workers sound practical advice on recognising drug use and understanding the physiological and social effects of both legal and illegal drugs. Ideal for use in the classroom and to provoke discussion these books promote responsibility and understanding.

Helping Children to Cope with Grief
Our books deal not only with bereavement in children but also with the sense of loss provoked by parental divorce, separation, illness and disaster. They equip teachers with the skills needed to help children express their grief and face their difficulties.

Self Esteem
The importance of developing a strong sense of self-esteem cannot be overestimated. Feeling good about themselves helps children learn more effectively, cope with stress and integrate themselves in the classroom. Our books on self-esteem and social skills offer a range of enjoyable and effective activities for use in the classroom and at home.

Lifegames
Lifegames are a series of therapeutic board games for children and adolescents. They provide a safe space for emotions to be explored and difficult questions to be asked and answered. With a general focus on social skills and coping these games cover the issues of bereavement, divorce and bullying and will help teachers and counsellors to communicate effectively with children struggling with these issues.

Special Educational Needs

Autism Spectrum & Asperger Syndrome & Non Verbal Learning Disabilities

Our books are designed to promote understanding and provide teachers with practical advice for the integrated classroom. They look at difficulties that might arise for the autistic or Asperger child his/her fellow pupils and for the teacher and suggest strategies to deal with them efficiently.

'The playground is probably the most threatening environment you could put a child with AS [Asperger Syndrome] into. Vast open spaces, complex social interactions, a myriad of unwritten rules to adhere to, and a plethora of sounds, sights and smells combine to make a child with AS feel at a loss. It is a situation in which a child with AS who has poor motor skills will stand out like a sore thumb and be particularly vulnerable to bullying, both physical and verbal...

  • Have places where the child can go if it all becomes too much

  • Identify who the child can go to if he or she needs it

  • Consider arranging for the child a mix of the first half of lunch hour in the playground and the second half in a quiet place.

  • Talk to the child about the difference between teasing and joking.'
Matt Winter, Asperger Syndrome: What Teachers Need to Know

Our books present a range of perspectives. Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome by 13 year old Luke Jackson, who has Asperger Syndrome, won the NASEN & TES Special Educational Needs Children's Book Award 2003, and is an invaluable resource for the classroom. It provides advice and support for the AS child and allows fellow classmates and teachers to understand the difficulties they face in the school environment.

Our range of fiction books and can be read individually or as a classroom activity, and represent an imaginative way of introducing the theme of difference.

Children on the autistic spectrum often have difficulties understanding facial expressions. Mind Reading: The Interactive Guide to Emotions, is software that provides an innovative and fun way to help children develop their social skills and integrate themselves more easily into the classroom.

ADHD
Have you noticed a child in your classroom is restless, has a short attention span and is impulsive? Children with ADHD can sometimes be seen as disruptive. Teachers and educational psychologists with first hand knowledge of ADHD children write many of our ADHD books, providing invaluable guidance for parents and teachers.

Dyspraxia
When a child has dyspraxia, everyday coordination tasks such as using scissors, running and keyboard skills can be highly complex. Jessica Kingsley Publishers publishes a selection of books that will assist parents and teachers in helping dyspraxic children fit into their everyday environment.

Dyslexia
Written by dyslexics or their parents, our books on Dyslexia give a valuable insight that will be useful to parents and teachers.

Gifted Children
Gifted children with learning deficits need to be nurtured and supported within their school and home environment in order for them to flourish in later life. These children require their teachers to have different strategies and our books help identify gifted and talented children and give practical advice.

Home Schooling
Deciding to homeschool a child is not an easy decision. Our books help parents make this decision and provide guidance and support to those who do choose to homeschool.
