KUMON MATHS AND ENGLISH - NOW OVER 40,000 STUDENTS IN THE UK!
The popularity of the Kumon study programmes has grown to new heights and there are now over 40,000 students studying Kumon in the UK. This growth has been partially due to the recent launch of the new Kumon English programme.

The Kumon Maths and English programmes are worksheet-based study programmes which are suitable for children of all ages and abilities as they are tailored to the individual needs of each student. Students attend their local study centre twice a week for approximately 30 minutes per subject and on the other days of the week, complete a small piece of work at home (10-15 mins per subject).

Mr Fujiwara, Managing Director of Kumon Educational UK, says: "With Kumon there is no failing. Each child works at his or her own pace and the Kumon Instructor monitors progress carefully so that work is set at exactly the right level - never too hard, yet not too easy."

HOW DOES KUMON RELATE TO THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM?
The Kumon Maths programme focuses on improving core mathematical skills, arithmetic (without the aid of a calculator) and algebra. The programme helps children to improve their addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division, which are important foundations for all mathematics. Once these four operations are fully mastered, students then progress on to fractions, decimals, positive and negative numbers, and algebra. The maths programme can be studied as far as advanced calculus, approximately first year degree in standard.

The Kumon English programme helps children to improve their spelling, punctuation, grammar and reading comprehension skills, which are valuable literacy skills for their schoolwork. As students progress through the course, they develop more advanced skills such as precis, essay structure and critical writing. The main aim of the Kumon English programme is to develop a life-long habit of reading for education and enjoyment, reinforcing and complementing the key objectives of the National Curriculum.

WHAT DO THE EXPERTS SAY?
Pie Corbett, an ex-teacher, OFSTED inspector and consultant for the National Literacy Strategy, says: "Reading makes you intelligent, so I'm really thrilled that Kumon is introducing an English programme which focuses on reading. I have seen what Kumon has done for my own child - Kumon influences the whole quality of the child's life and turns them on as learners."

Pie Corbett states: "Kumon is making a unique contribution to education - it's doing such important work."

Miss Jones, primary school teacher and literacy co-ordinator, comments: "The progress made by students studying the programme is amazing! If I ever needed convincing, the results speak for themselves."

CASE STUDY:
Victoria Rolfe, 15, has completed the Kumon English programme and originally began studying it during it's trial stage. Interestingly, Victoria's mother, Ann, was so impressed with her daughter's progress that she decided to become a Kumon Instructor.

Victoria says: "I was already studying the Kumon Maths programme and it was really helping me with my school work, so when the English programme was introduced, I thought it would be fun to
study that as well. I have really enjoyed studying the programme because it is really well structured and you can work at your own pace."

Victoria's parents, Ann and Paul, say: "Kumon gives you such a good basic grounding that you become confident in the subject, which means that they enjoy the subject more. Furthermore, the Kumon work reduces the amount of pressure placed on the student because it prepares them well for their schoolwork."
