Digital v Photography.

Photography, whether it's a hobby or profession, generates passion and despite the constant advance of Digital technologies, still provides the ultimate results for Photographers. Opinions about whether Photography is dead, from purists not wanting to be caught dead with a digital camera to computer aficionados declaring film obsolete continue.

PhotoGlossy believes this debate ignores many of their own customers who utilize both technologies according to the work they wish to carry out. It’s “horses for courses” as both tracks have their own assets and specialist strengths.

The advantages of digital over conventional photography are mainly that images can be viewed instantly, meaning no wastage of time or materials. The digital camera has increased in popularity recently because of a decline in hardware prices. Many digital cameras are comparable to a 35 mm camera in price without the extra-added cost of buying or developing film.

The disadvantages (at time of writing) are that shutter speeds, exposure and colour control are not as flexible as with a traditional camera and picture quality is not as good, although technology in the digital field is advancing almost daily and the quality difference between the two is closing rapidly!

The digital camera can store images using internal removable type storage, a compact flash card, a smart media card, or a memory stick. These types of storage replace film as the storage media. PhotoGlossy sells all three types of storage; See our media section of the website for more information.

Photo Printing

Inkjet paper is equally crucial for obtaining top quality photos using the digital route. For best photo quality results you will require a coated paper that accepts printing of over 300 Dpi (Dots Per Inch). Photo quality papers are split into 3 main categories; photo glossy, photo satin and photo matte coated.

Rather than sticking exclusively with original branded papers that are bundled with your printer, try a few third-party papers too which usually give equally good results and are often cheaper too.

PhotoGlossy stocks both CompuColor 260gsm and 200gsm the new Folex 240gsm and 180gsm for premium quality results.

A little experimentation and dabbling with the various types of inkjet papers when you begin will pay off.

Enjoy.

PhotoGlossy also has a wide range of Digital & Photographic Books on the website for both the enthusiast and beginner to help you advance your enjoyment. These range from step by step guides for those starting out to books showing ideas for increased creativity and more advanced techniques.

The best selling photography book is “Basic Photography” and for digital users “Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers”. We are always open to ideas for new products or book titles so if there is a product or book you are looking for please email us at sales@photoglossy.com quoting “Infomat” and we will try to help.
