Rimmel London – the UK’s number one makeup brand*
 

The Rimmel London story began in 1820 when a respected French perfumer accepted an invitation to manage an esteemed perfumery on London’s Bond Street and so moved to England with his family.

His son and apprentice, Eugene Rimmel, followed in his father’s footsteps and in 1834, opened his own perfumery. By the age of 24, Eugene Rimmel had become an immensely talented perfumer and cosmetics innovator.

When Eugene Rimmel died in 1887, his two sons inherited a solid cosmetics empire. They concentrated on the growing popularity of colour cosmetics, with particular focus on enhancement of the eyes. Such has been the popularity of Rimmel mascaras that, to this day, many Europeans continue to ask for ‘a Rimmel’ when purchasing a mascara.

After the Second World War, Britain prepared for a new commercial boom. The Hollywood heroine became an aspirational icon, and cosmetics, like fashion, were in great demand. The Rimmel brand was re-launched with an expanded colour range, modernised packaging and the launch of the first self-selection display stand.
 

In 1956 Rimmel launched a new marketing initiative entitled, 'Beauty on a Budget'. The campaign became synonymous with the brand and proved a winning formula throughout the 60's and 70's.

By the 1980's Rimmel had become Britain's most popular cosmetic brand, offering an unbeatable range of colour and choice with an affordable price tag.

In 2001, Rimmel was re-launched as Rimmel London, with a new advertising campaign and a new face: quintessential Brit supermodel, Kate Moss – bringing the brand back to its London origins.
