BETTER
COACHING…BETTER SPORT
sports coach UK works with other sporting organisations to raise the profile
of coaching, develop coaching as a profession and support individual
coaches to enhance their skills within the UK.
sports coach UK aims
to help coaches through giving them up-to-date practical help, from the
volunteer coach right up to National Team level. sports
coach UK wants to help coaching in the UK to be recognised as World
Class in both its practice and achievements. The organisation
works closely with British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic
Association and the Home Country Sports Councils, and with governing
bodies, local authorities, and higher and further education to find out
what they need for coaching and coaches, and develop a suitable response.
It is estimated that there are over 500,000 coaches currently
in the UK, and one of the aims of sports coach UK is to help these coaches improve their coaching
knowledge and practices, ultimately producing better sportsmen and women
across the country.
To become a qualified coach in your chosen sport, you will
need to take the coaching awards offered by the national governing body (NGB)
of the sport. For details of your NGB, please visit our website – www.sportscoachuk.org
The work of the organisation is not just limited to coaches
or indeed potential coaches. sports
coach UK also works in a joint initiative funded by Sport England,
which forms part of the Active Schools Programme. The Coaching for
Teachers programme provides opportunities for teachers involved in the
delivery of extra-curricular school sport to improve their teaching and
coaching, update their knowledge by attending sports governing body
courses, and obtain qualifications.
Coaching for Teachers courses (supported by BAALPE and PEA UK
and held at Easter and Summer) are priced at £10 per day.
They are delivered by accredited NGB tutors and provide excellent
free resources. These courses are for primary, secondary, PE specialist,
non-PE specialist teachers who contribute to extra-curricular work and
special schools adults actively involved in coaching extra-curricular
sport and recommended to attend by the school.

coach UK. The workshops cover a broad range of topics to suit your
needs covering areas such as Motivation and Mental Toughness, Planning and
Practice, Improving Practices and Skill and Safety and Injury. Further
details of the workshops provided by sports
coach UK and where they are held can be found on the website at www.sportscoachuk.org.
sports coach UK aims
to cover the whole spectrum of coaching in the UK, from the volunteer
helper to the National Coach, and it is at this latter end of the scale
that sports coach UK has High
Performance Coaching Workshops. Working alongside the British Olympic
Association, sports coach UK
has designed these workshops specifically for the UK's current and
aspiring high performance coaches, sports scientists and athlete support
teams.

Recent high profile court cases have signified the need for
coaches to be aware of best practices when they are responsible for a
group of people within their care. As part of its overall commitment to
ensuring that we have access to quality coaches in this country, sports coach UK has produced a series of best practice workshops to
not only teach people, but to ensure that sport is fun and safe for all
participants. Workshops in
this area include Good Practice and Child Protection, Equity in Your
Coaching and Coaching Disabled Sportspeople.
