This family business started in a small
retail unit in 1984 and expanded through a mix of organic growth and
company acquisition Today Worktown generate an annual turnover of £9
million. Worktown has moved away from managing it, it has taken up a
position of managing the ordering process and we believe this is a far
more efficient way of working. Worktown is able to service its customer
base with a product range that runs to 20,000 lines. The vast majority of
these are delivered via next day delivery if the order is placed before
5:30pm the afternoon before.
Worktown methods of
keeping costs under control have been achieved by taking a long, hard look
at the number of suppliers that are dealt with. At one time Worktown was
sourcing from 150 separate companies with all the attendant problems. No
one contract was large enough to justify Worktown being offered a discount
that it could then pass on to its own customers. The answer was to
rationalise the supply base so that today Worktown has a close
relationship with just 17 suppliers. Even this does not reveal the true
picture. One supplier, Spicers, gets over 90 per cent of Worktown’s
business.
By offering that
scale of business, Worktown has been able to negotiate very favourable
terms. Spicers of course are relieved of the costs of dealing with a
multitude of individual customers. By focusing on delivery and added
value, Worktown has been able to compete on factors over and above price.
Our customers understand the value of the service we offer, by being able
to rely on us, they are able to reduce their own inventories of office
equipment. They can track the progress of their orders online and we can
provide them with accurate management information. This gives them an
exact breakdown of their spending and therefore they can keep control.
Overall, the client has to do much less work to keep their departments
running efficiently. We have a highly successful business to business
website which now brings in around 65 per cent of our repeat business.
